Kitrini Poli's Tangerine Peels
when we met on the way
we used to put tangerine peels on our eyes
so our resistance would grow against the pains…
says Haris Alexiou, in her song “Odos Aritetolous”
which I’ve tought “Kitrini Poli” - on the other passionate shore
where the sun sinks in the waters every evening
and with the black and white keys of her piano
takes me to the heart of an old street
to a black and white photograph with notched edges
wonder what has happened after all the years
to the eye lids on which tangerine peels rested once upon a time
the childhood which was bound to end and be drawn apart
yet to the only true love of all lifetime
what has been shown
to those two pairs of eyes
what has ever been denied
to those two pairs of eyes to see
while endless rain falls on the cheeks
and who
once more puts on another’s eye
has burned with love to put
the peels of another tangerine
so resistance would grow against the pains
in how many seconds
in how many blinks pass the long gone years
while barren cheeks and bags under the eyes long for the unfalling rain
when grown-ups may not see the past
may children see the yet to come
when we met on the way
we used to put tangerine peels on our eyes
so our resistance would grow against the pains…
my eyes too are closed
listening to Muammer Ketencoglu’s song
in a room where a lamp does not need to glow
an old street outside
April rain
passionate Ankara shore at its edge
tangerine peels in my pocket...
